Noise delays onset of sustained firing in a minimal model of persistent activity

چکیده
We report a noise-induced delay of bifurcation leading to persistent synaptically sustained "ring in a simple neural circuit. Two neural saddle-node oscillators are coupled with reciprocal excitatory synapses. Increasing synaptic current moves the circuit through a bifurcation into a bistable anti-phase regime. Applying a small random current to both neurons delays the onset of bistability. We analyse the phase plane for the various activity regimes and "nd that this noise induced mechansim can be related to the structure of asynchronous and synchronous activity states. c © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Intrinsic and Network Contributions to Reverberatory activity: Reactive Clamp and Modeling Studies
Cortical cells belong to small interconnected ensembles. These ensembles have the potential of being activated in a reverberatory fashion in vitro and in vivo, spontaneously or in response to stimulation. We combined computer simulations and in vitro intracellular recording from prefrontal cortical neurons to explore the elicitation, modulation, and termination of these reverberations. In compu...
متن کاملRegulation of persistent activity by background inhibition in an in vitro model of a cortical microcircuit.
We combined in vitro intracellular recording from prefrontal cortical neurons with simulated synaptic activity of a layer 5 prefrontal microcircuit using a dynamic clamp. During simulated in vivo background conditions, the cell responded to a brief depolarization with a sequence of spikes that outlasted the depolarization, mimicking the activity of a cell recorded during the delay period of a w...
متن کاملA Simulation-Based Study of Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus Pyramidal Cell Firing Patterns
A two-variable integrate and fire model is presented to study the role of transient outward potassium currents in producing temporal aspects of dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) pyramidal cells with different profiles namely the chopper, the pauser and the buildup. This conductance based model is a reduced version of KM-LIF model (Meng & Rinzel, 2010) which captures qualitative firing features of a...
متن کاملDopamine Facilitates the Sustained Firing of Rat Layer V Prefrontal Pyramidal Cells in Vitro
In delayed match-to-sample tasks in monkeys, recordings from some neurons in prefrontal cortex (PFC) in vivo show sustained increases in the firing rate during the delay period between the stimulus onset and the response. The performance on the task is impaired when the dopamine levels in the PFC are either too low or too high, suggesting that dopaminergic modulation is involved in encoding the...
متن کاملResponses of primary somatosensory cortical neurons to controlled mechanical stimulation.
The results of psychophysical studies suggest that displacement velocity may contribute significantly to the sensation of subcortical somatosensory neurons. The cortical correlates of these phenomena, however, are not known. In the present study the responses of rapidly adapting (RA) neurons in the forelimb region of cat primary somatosensory cortex (SI) to controlled displacement of skin and h...
